Italian Renaissance Retreat: Florence, Italy

This retreat is born from my personal passion for the city and the breathtaking country surrounding it.

This retreat has been a long time coming seeing as I've lived in Florence for nearly 4 years and have passionately vetted out all the best restaurants, museums, shops, gelato stores, bars, produce stands, wine stores...well you get the picture.

I LOVE Tuscany and have fully embraced the culture and way of life here. I'm delighted to put together an itinerary that reflects my deep appreciation for Italian lifestyle including the arts, Florentine history, family-owned restaurants, cheese and wine farms, music, the natural beauty, the small town charm, and the medieval influence.  This retreat will transport you to the Italian Renaissance and provide you with exceptional experiences that will undoubtedly inspire your own personal renaissance.

This retreat participates in our Conscious Traveler Initiative, where we donate a portion of the profits to a local non-profit organization that directly supports the improvement of conditions for people, animals or the environment in the area we visit.  For this location, we have chosen the organization Nosotros.  This intercultural women’s association helps foreign-born women find their footing in Italy. Working with healthcare professionals, university professors, and linguistic and cultural mediators, the association provides training on topics linked to racial and gender-based discrimination and violence and challenges related to multiculturalism.

We will be staying at a luxury hotel in the best possible location in all of Florence.  This hotel comprises a historic tower on the most beautiful street in the city, Via Tornabuoni.  The history of this street goes back to the Tornabuoni family from the Renaissance Period.  The Tornabuoni family, one of the oldest and most recognized Florentine families, married into the Medici family in 1444. The two most interesting people in the Tornabuoni family were none other than women. Via Tornabuoni isn’t just a dedication to the powerful Florentine families from the past and the present but it is also paying tribute to the two Tornabuoni women who made an impact on Florence. This long street hosts some of the most exquisite stores, elegant hotels, chic coffee shops and restaurants.  Each hotel room has a stunning view of the Arno River or overlooks the city.  The rooms are beautifully updated with marble bathrooms.  And there are two spacious terraces that overlook 360 degrees of the city (which is not common) where you can relax, have a glass of wine and watch the sunset, journal, or enjoy time with friends.

Tuscany has the reputation for having the best food in all of Italy and I couldn't agree more! Food will be a highlight on this retreat as we will be indulging in all the wonderful Tuscan dishes at the best restaurants.  Every restaurant is hand picked and will give you the most delicious, authentic foodie experience.  We will be having some dinners in the center of Florence and we will also be having some dinners in the countryside enjoying the setting of the spectacular Tuscan hills filled with olive trees and vineyards.  The breakfasts at the hotel will be very abundant and you will have many options to choose from that can accommodate anyone's diet restriction.  One day we will have a wine pairing lunch at a sheep farm following a tour of the cheese-making process.  You will also be introduced to the best gelato and panini in Florence as we do a foodie tour through the city.  Although this retreat offers meat options, it's possible to request only vegetarian or vegan as well.

This retreat is designed to be a boutique travel experience that includes daily yoga.  It's for people who want to see and do all the best of what Florence has to offer but also feel centered and good in their bodies.  Each day there will be a different excursion planned that encompasses a different aspect of Florence and Italy as a whole.  Two days we will have 2 different tours of the arts including a city tour that will enlighten you to the prominence and important history of Florence, and another that takes you into one of the most important museums of all of Italy where you can witness the genius of Michelangelo's The David.  There will be 2 days that we leave the city and venture out into the incredible beauty of the Tuscan Countryside.  One of those days we will go to the beautiful city of Siena for a tour and lunch, and on the way back we will stop at a 5 star luxury hotel where we will indulge in a 2 hour spa treatment.  Another day out we will go into Chianti to a sheep farm where we will have a tour of how they make the famous pecorino cheese and have lunch outside on a terrace in the vineyards.  We will also visit the charming town of Greve and do some wine-tasting at the famous Antinori winery where you can also purchase wine and special local products.  Another day we will stay in Florence for an incredible Culinary Tour (olive oils, balsamics, truffle, fresh pastas and more!) and some free time for shopping, of course, and a gondola ride down the Arno for a spectacular view of the city.  We will also be going to a classical music concert in a beautiful church in the center one evening and every night we will enjoy some of the best food Italy has to offer!!

This retreat will feature a daily yoga class led by Michelle Lee.  The classes will be held outside on the rooftop terrace with spectacular views of the city and Duomo.  The classes are offered every morning at 8:30am and are open to all levels, beginner to practiced, and will be lead in an Ashtanga-inspired general vinyasa flow.  Yoga classes will be offered in a way to relax, stimulate, and help guests grow in their own personal practice. The yoga lessons will begin the mornings and in this theme of retreat, will be the assistant to help guests feel physically good, emotionally centered and open to explore deeper in the focus of their personal and authentic experience of the day ahead.
