Join us in The Best City in the World as awarded by Travel & Leisure for 2 years in a row now!
Getting your story out on paper has transformative healing powers. In fact, writing about who you are is often a step on the path to self-acceptance. Between zenned-out morning yoga classes and adventures in one of Mexico’s most beautiful and traditional cities, you’ll take time to delve deep into your story, find out how it's been affecting your life, learn to loosen its grasp on your daily actions, and even laugh about it. Whether your goal is to write a memoir, pitch an essay for publication, get to know yourself better, or simply let go of an old story, this retreat will offer you the space you need to get it all onto paper.
Some of what to expect from the workshops:
Connecting with your self and others on an intimate level
Writing prompts and questions that ask you to look deep within yourself
The opportunity to share your words, your story, your self
The time you deserve to put pen to paper and let it out
The chance to let go of an old story and start fresh
Guidance during and after the workshop to polish a beautiful piece of writing
This retreat is being held in what is being called The Best City in the World by Travel and Leisure and Time Magazine. While this UNESCO World Heritage Site has made the list for the best city in Latin America, it's the first time in the 22 years of the contest that it has topped the list of all international cities. San Miguel de Allende is a stunning small colonial city located 4 hours northwest of the capital in the rolling hills of central Mexico. Once a prominent market town and the birthplace of Mexico's independence from Spain, it fell into decline and became a near ghost-town in the late 1800s. What remained became frozen in time, and it was declared a "historic and protected town" by the Mexican government in 1926. Gradually re-discovered by writers & artists, the city's historic streets and adobe walled-buildings are now brimming with shops, cafes, & art galleries. This baroque-style city is akin to a European city with cobblestone streets, Spanish colonial style architecture, and delicious creative cuisine. The historic city center spans 68 blocks and contains many small, hidden gems and beautiful photo opportunities. The central plaza is surrounded by open air cafés, perfect for a coffee or a glass of wine. And San Miguel de Allende is filled with amazing local artisans and is a great place to buy handmade crafts and jewelry. You can find everything from baskets to pottery to embroidered skirts.
CONSCIOUS TRAVELER INITIATIVE
This retreat participates in our Conscious Traveler Initiative, where we donate a portion of the profits to a local non-profit organization that directly supports the improvement of conditions for people, animals or the environment in the area we visit. For this location, we have chosen the organization CASA to donate to. CASA is a non-profit organization that has been serving the poor, particularly adolescents, rural women and their families, through health, social service, education, and environmental outreach programs since 1981. It also created Mexico’s first government approved Midwifery School, which has been cited as meeting international criteria for effective replication in countries worldwide.
We will be staying at a wonderful boutique hotel that offers peace and privacy in the charming and magical colonial city of San Miguel de Allende. A perfect place for a writer's retreat! Its colonial architecture of the seventeenth century is famous for hosting many film celebrities of Mexicos golden age such as Maria Felix, Dolores del Rio, Agustin Lara, Pedro Armendaris, Jorge Negrete among others. The hotel was named by the host of that time, Jose Guadalupe Mujica who was an internationally renowned opera singer and poet. We have a beautiful lawn to practice yoga every morning and there's plenty of space on the property to relax, do some inspired writing and enjoy the perfect weather in san Miguel.
The cuisine of San Miguel de Allende is one of the best aspects of any visit there, highlighting Mexican cuisine but not exclusive to it at all. In fact, San Miguel has an excellent array of award-winning restaurants and cafes ranging from traditional to cutting edge. They are fast earning the city a reputation as one of Mexico’s top culinary capitals. Past retreat guests insist the meals were one of the best parts of the whole week. Healthy Mexican breakfast including fresh produce from the local area is served daily at the hotel, including eggs and specialty dishes. Select dinners are also included and have been carefully chosen to offer the best cuisine the city has to offer. San Miguel is definitely a foodie scene and one of the reasons why it's a chosen destination to share with people. We can accommodate vegetarian and vegan diets.
The first day we will take a private tour of the city including being guided through all the major historical monuments along with enjoying a tour to beautiful particular artisan stores. Another day we will be going to the local hot springs, La Grota which will rejuvenate and relax your entire being allowing for deeper creativity to flow through you! The following day go to a boutique winery outside the city including a tour of their beautiful lavendar farm and followed by a delicious wine and cheese tasting. Our last day we will go to the the "best spa in Mexico" (and I can attest to this!) and we will have luxurious 90 minute massage spa treatments. San Miguel is a beautiful European-like city that attracts artists and writers from all over the world. If you are a photographer, a writer, an artist, or just needing some creative inspiration in your life, this retreat is for you!
No writing experience necessary. Everyone has the experience they need in that we’re all harboring a fascinating story. About our childhoods, marriages, families, or how we got to now. We’ll use writing therapy techniques, writing prompts, freeform journaling, and personalized questions to get you thinking and your pen moving. You’ll emerge feeling lighter with your story out on the page instead of festering inside.
LAURENNE SALA - WRITING WORKSHOP LEADER
Laurenne has spent a lifetime writing. Her professional career began in commercials where, as a vegetarian slinging burgers, she learned to write and think from different points of view. After years of writing copy, she transitioned to children’s books. Her first, You Made Me a Mother, is on shelves now with two to follow this year. It was when she finally wrote about her father’s suicide after 12 years of holding it in that she realized the power of story. The freedom and relief she felt in letting it go led her to create the storytelling stage show Taboo Tales in 2009. She’s helped hundreds of people write their stories and let them out on stage in front of a live audience. Seeing the relief that follows is her favorite part. Laurenne lives in Los Angeles with her husband and brand new baby.
This retreat will feature a daily yoga class led by Michelle Lee. The classes will be held outside on the lovely lawn by the pool each morning and are open to all levels, beginner to practiced, and will be lead in an Ashtanga-inspired general vinyasa flow. Yoga classes will be offered in a way to relax, stimulate, and help guests grow in their own personal practice. The yoga lessons will begin the mornings and in this theme of retreat, will be the assistant to help guests feel prepared and open to explore deeper in the focus of their writing and their authentic self-expression.
